JOHNNY LOWEBOW'S
"THE LOWEBOW" DOUBLE-NECK GUITAR/BASS HYBRID
Arguably one of the most iconic designs in the modern Cigar Box Guitar Revolution, the Lowebow electric cigar box guitar was designed by John Lowe of Xanadu Music in Memphis and one-man-band phenom, Richard Johnston. Legend has it, Johnston entered Lowe's music store and requested a cigar box guitar just like the one in this picture. The following week, he took that instrument and stole the show at the 2001 International Blues Talent Competition conducted by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, winning first place as well as the foundation's award for most promising new blues guitarist.Lowebows are constructed in a unique (and fiercely guarded) design using oak dowels, handwound pickups, beer caps and hose clamps. John Lowe went on to develop his instrument even further, adding "wings" for easier playing and eventually crafting his own boxes from masonite and other materials.
Lowe also performs as Johnny Lowebow, the one-man-assault band, playing guitar and bass lines on his Lowebow cigar box guitar and drumming with his feet. He's been known to hold drum stick in his strumming hand and play a snare drum as he strums!!! If you've never seen a Johnny Lowebow concert, your life is not complete... Labels: Old guitar
